Providing Safe Spaces for Youth to Grow

Using this funding Fundación Ambos has been able to provide numerous afterschool safe space activities for at-risk children and adolescents. In order to best target their interventions Fundación Ambos aims to conduct psychosocial evaluations on all of the participants in the programs that are offered; thus far in the project, 30 percent of the children and adolescents, as well as their parents, have been evaluated and work with members of Fundación Ambos to ensure that their learning is tailored to their needs. Classes in positive self-expression, including traditional dance, intercultural exchanges, and cultural history are offered so as to enhance self-esteem and a sense of communal belonging. In addition, practical classes in finance and literacy are provided. Over 100 young people and their families have benefited from the project thus far.

The “Súper Aula” (Super Classroom) program provides academic support to children with learning disabilities between the ages of 5 and 12. With support from RCL and PADF, the project has expanded to assist 116 children, all of whom receive tutoring in reading and writing so that they may reach grade-level proficiency. Participants also learn about different learning styles, teamwork, self-esteem and self-directed study.
