Since it was initially developed in 2014, MAST has been used to secure land and resource rights in Tanzania, Burkina Faso and Zambia. Learn more about each activity here: www.Land-Links.org/mast

In 2017, USAID launched the Land Technology Solutions program to refine and scale MAST to more countries. Learn more here: www.land-links.org/project/land-technology-solutions/

How does your innovation work?

MAST is a suite of tools and approaches that supports the collection and management of land rights and resource information. It integrates mobile applications and a web-based data management platform with participatory on-the-ground approaches.

The mobile application enables field teams to collect spatial, attribute, and multimedia data about land parcels and natural resources. Data is collected and stored on mobile devices and transferred to a cloud-based platform for data processing and management. This platform provides advanced functionality reviewed, processed, and approved for the preparation of land certificates.

LTS is helping USAID missions integrate MAST and land and resource mapping into new or future project design, and can also provide technical assistance to deploy small-scale, activities. Under LTS, the MAST Learning Platform was also developed on the USAID LandLinks site (www.land-links.org/mast), serving as a knowledge portal for information, tools, lessons-learned, and best practices.

Next Steps

USAID's Land Technology Solutions program is currently refining the MAST application based on lessons learned from programming in Burkina Faso, Tanzania, and Zambia. The new-and-improved MAST application will be extended to additional countries later in 2018.
