Advancing PYD through YouthPower Learning’s Top Resources

Advancing PYD through YouthPower Learning’s Top Resources

As YouthPower Learning draws to a close, a new phase begins in which the wealth of new collaborations, evidence, and resources that have been cultivated under the project’s umbrella become the building blocks for future youth development work.

Over the last five years, YouthPower Learning developed more than 300 resources, program tools, and multimedia products designed to support every phase of the program cycle across various sectors. The lasting legacy of YouthPower Learning depends on our community taking key learnings forward for continued impact.

We have curated some of the seminal products to provide a sample of how these materials can provide guidance to you and your teams as you continue your work:

What do we know about PYD?
The Systematic Review of Positive Youth Development in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) and associated brief document the effectiveness of PYD programs. The review presents the results of a rigorous analysis of existing evidence of PYD in LMICs; expands the knowledge base on the impact and measurement of PYD programs; and provides valuable insights for implementing organizations, researchers, and donors.

How do we measure PYD?

The PYD Measurement Toolkit: A Practical Guide for Implementers of Youth Programs offers guidance and resources for those working in LMICs to integrate PYD principles in their monitoring and evaluation systems, as well as illustrative indicators to effectively measure PYD outputs and outcomes. This toolkit is also available in French

How do we better engage youth?
Sometimes seeing is believing. The Youth-Led Club Documentary is a grant-funded series of videos based on a year in the life of Komo Learning Centres' youth-led club, demonstrating an in-depth approach to youth engagement within one local program in Uganda.

How do we apply PYD across sectors?
Examples of Positive Youth Development Program Activities Aligned with PYD Features, Mapped to a Socio-Ecological Model provides illustrative activities that transcend sectors and could be applied in a variety of settings.

How do we design youth-inclusive programs in the agricultural sector?
The two-part Feed The Future Project Design Guide for Youth-Inclusive Agriculture and Food Systems highlights ways to develop youth-inclusive projects and activities that account for both the diversity of the youth cohort as well as the dynamism of the agricultural sector.

How can we integrate youth into democracy, human rights, and governance programming?
YouthPower Learning’s Toolkit for Youth Inclusion in Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance contains resources for integrating youth effectively into programming, including modules specific to 10 sub-sectors. The toolkit also offers Entry Points for Youth Integration into the Program Cycle

What is the evidence on youth entrepreneurship programs?
One promising, albeit nascent, approach is effectuation theory-based, youth entrepreneurship training programs. Research on the Applications of Effectuation Theory on Youth Entrepreneurship Programs sheds light on applicability to the African youth context, providing training guidance for applying the theory for entrepreneurship.

What evidence and best practices are available related to PYD and health?
YouthPower Learning created a tool to support providers in conducting routine inquiries for intimate partner violence and sexual violence with adolescent girls and young women. Planning and Conducting Index Testing and Partner Notification for Adolescent Girls and Young Women: Implementation and Clinical Guidance for Health Services also includes resources and support on ensuring adolescent-friendly services.

Families Matter: How Families Improve Adolescent and Youth Reproductive Health is a brief highlighting existing evidence on family-based adolescent and youth reproductive health interventions that will help program implementers and researchers better address the reproductive health needs of adolescents in LMICs.

A set of products titled Research on Understanding and Tackling the Gendered Drivers of Poor Adolescent Mental Health includes a conceptual framework for understanding the context of adolescent mental health and two briefs that synthesize an analysis of Global School-based Health Surveys for six LMICs. These materials investigate the risk and protective factors that contribute to poor mental health, providing recommendations for programming and research.

What is the role of social inclusion in PYD programs?
Social Inclusion in Positive Youth Development Programs is a brief that covers key considerations for understanding, tracking, measuring, and evaluating the impact of social inclusion initiatives.

A full list of PYD resources and webinar recordings is available on YouthPower.org. We hope you will explore all that is available and consider how they might help take your work to the next level.
