Queens Model High school is a school renowned for its track-record in producing brilliant and well mannered students here in Enugu State. But one thing, which this school lacks, is a solid and well functional vocational unit. The vocational unit at this school is simply non-existent. The foregoing has led to so many students from the school not doing so well in the informal sector here in Enugu State, Nigeria.
I currently found an innovative Youth Economic Empowerment (YEE) platform here in Enugu State called Unskilled to Skilled (U2S). U2S caters for every unskilled and unemployed youth in Nigeria (ages 15-30). U2S trains various unskilled and unemployed youth on various vocational skills like hairdressing, baking, bag-making, ICT etc. At the end of their training, we then provide jobs for them, thereby making them to be financial independent.
In addressing the foregoing challenge facing this school, we therefore decided to take our YEE model to Queens Model High school. We trained various students on how to make both handbags and liquid soap. This activity was indeed a huge success. This was because students went back home with a new found skill.
This photo depicts one of the PYD features and that is skill-building. Also, the sector that is most relevant to this picture is Youth Economic Empowerment.
