In December 2019, I had the honor for the first time to attend the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Madrid, Spain. When I went to the conference, I didn't realize how unprepared I was to join. Despite my understanding of the climate policy developments of the past few decades and having been a member of the YOUNGO constituency for a few months, I had little knowledge of what COP negotiations looked like on the ground. One could criticize my position as being irresponsible and contributing to the “climate tourism” that is happening with so many people going to the COP every year, and that this phenomenon has a huge impact in terms of greenhouse gas emissions from air travel.

Today, I realize that it is important when attending the COP, to have a strategy and purpose, to make the time spent at the COP productive and meaningful. I also have a much better understanding of what the COP is and what contribution young people like me can make. It wouldn't have been like this if I hadn't gone to Madrid the first time.

My experience prompted me to write this guide for young people when they participate for the first time in the future in the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change so that their participation in the summit will be more aware, useful and goal-oriented. Such a guide is by no means comprehensive or complete, so I hope that over time it will gather more input from members of the community. Specifically, much can be said about specific negotiation tracks, their progress, and youth participation in them. Most importantly, I would like to thank all the members of the YOUNGO Circle who contributed to the drafting of this document (and are listed on the first page), without whom this guide and the valuable advice it contains would not have come to pass.”

"في ديسمبر عام 2019، تشرفت لأول مرة بحضور مؤتمر الأطراف لاتفاقية الأمم المتحدة الإطارية بشأن تغيّر المناخ في مدريد، إسبانيا. عندما ذهبت إلى المؤتمر، لم أكن أدرك مدىعدم استعدادي للانضمام. على الرغم من فهمي لتطورات سياسة المناخ في العقود القليلة الماضية وكوني عضوًا في دائرة YOUNGO لبضعة أشهر، لم يكن لدي سوى القليل منالمعرفة حول كيف تبدو مفاوضات مؤتمر الأطراف على أرض الواقع. يمكن للمرء أن ينتقد موقفي ويعتبره غير مسؤول ويساهم في "السياحة المناخية" التي تحدث مع ذهاب العديد منالأشخاص إلى مؤتمر الأطراف كل عام، وأن هذه الظاهرة لها تأثير هائل من حيث انبعاثات الغازات الدفيئة الناتجة عن السفر الجوي.

اليوم، أدرك أنه من المهم عند حضور مؤتمر الأطراف، أن يكون هناك استراتيجية وهدف، لجعل الوقت المستغرق في مؤتمر الأطراف مثمرًا وهادفًا. كما أن لدي فهمًا أفضل بكثير لماهية مؤتمر الأطراف وما هي المساهمة التي يمكن للشباب مثلي تحقيقها. لم يكن الأمر ليكون كذلك لو لم أذهب إلى مدريد في المرة الأولى. 

دفعتني تجربتي إلى كتابة هذا الدليل للشباب عندما يشاركون لأول مرة في المستقبل في مؤتمر الأطراف لاتفاقية الأمم المتحدة الإطارية بشأن تغيّر المناخ حتى تكون مشاركتهم فيالقمة أكثر وعيًا وفائدة وتوجهًا نحو الهدف. مثل هذا الدليل لا يُعد بأي حال من الأحوال دليلاً شاملاً أو كاملاً، لذا آمل أن يجمع بمرور الوقت المزيد من الإسهامات من أفراد المجتمع. وعلىوجه التحديد، هناك الكثير مما يمكن قوله عن مسارات مفاوضات محددة، ومدى تقدمها، ومشاركة الشباب فيها. والأهم من ذلك، أود أن أشكر جميع أعضاء دائرة YOUNGO الذينساهموا في صياغة هذه الوثيقة (وهم مدرجون في الصفحة الأولى)، فلولاهم لم يكن هذا الدليل بما يتضمنه من نصائح قيمة ليخرج إلى النور."
