Our speakers shared key messages and takeaways from the guides as well as their relevance to policymakers, donors and implementers. Highlights included:

 

Dr. Asyia Kazmi, Global Education Policy Lead, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, kicked off the event, explained the purpose of the Implementing the Science of Teaching grant, and highlighted the importance of structured pedagogy to improve literacy, numeracy and overall learning outcomes.

 

Michael Crawford, Lead Education Specialist, World Bank, helped to frame the discussion by describing how structured pedagogy responds directly to the learning crisis specifically in the context of World Bank Accelerator countries.

 

Dr. Benjamin Piper, Senior Director, Africa Education, RTI International, provided an overview of structured pedagogy programs and introduced the audience to the Advisory Committee that provides external guidance on the Implementing the Science of Teaching grant.

 

Joe DeStefano, Senior Director, Policy, Systems, and Governance, RTI International, underscored the main messages and key takeaways for five of the Structured Pedagogy guides including: Guide 1: Government Leadership and Teacher AdoptionGuide 2: Designing an Effective Structured Pedagogy ProgramGuide 7: Data Systems and Accountability, and Guide 8: What Education Leaders Need to know to Support Structured Pedagogy. He also discussed a special addition to the Structured Pedagogy series, a Note to Education Leaders, which covers advice on the efforts needed for successful deployment of structured pedagogy.

 

Dr. Margaret (Peggy) Dubeck, Senior Literacy Researcher, RTI International, dove deeper into materials development for a structured pedagogy program. Dr. Dubeck discussed Guide 3: Curriculum and Scope and Sequence Development for Literacy and NumeracyGuide 4:Teaching and Learning Materials Development, and concluded with an overview of the Literature Review of Structured Pedagogy.

 

Dr. Wendi Ralaingita, Senior Education Advisor, RTI International, explained the essentials of teacher professional development in a structured pedagogy program. She highlighted key takeaways from Guide 5: Teacher Professional Development—Teacher Training and Guide 6: Teacher Professional Development—Ongoing Teacher Support.

 

Dr. Stephen Taylor, Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation, South African Department of Basic Education, described how the guides will be a practical tool for policymakers in responding to the learning crisis.

 

 - Rebecca Rhodes, Senior Education Specialist, USAID, discussed how the guides will be useful for Education Officers to design effective literacy and numeracy programs as well as how they will be useful to implementing partners to improve the quality of implementation.
